Junior Faculty Positions in Experimental Nuclear Science at FRIB

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for up to three junior faculty positions in Experimental Nuclear Science.

Candidates are expected to hold a PhD in physics, chemistry, engineering or a related field at the time of appointment. Candidates must exhibit high promise for excellence in both research and teaching, commitment to diversity, and expertise in experimental low-energy nuclear science. We are especially interested in scientists with a strong record of research accomplishments in spectroscopy of weakly-bound neutron-rich rare isotopes, fusion/fission studies with rare isotopes, or reaction studies constraining the nuclear equation of state. Demonstrated ability to develop state-of-the-art experimental equipment is desired.

The positions will be filled at the rank of Assistant Professor within the FRIB faculty position system. FRIB Faculty hold a multi-year fixed term appointment and will normally be jointly appointed in the FRIB and an appropriate academic unit.

Successful candidates are expected to establish and sustain a sponsored research program in low-energy nuclear science with rare isotopes, make scholarly contributions to their discipline, be effective instructors and mentors to a diverse set of students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and engage in institutional and public service.

The FRIB laboratory provides world-class research opportunities in low-energy Nuclear Science with the facilities at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory and in the near future with FRIB itself. For the ninth straight year, MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report’s rankings of graduate schools.

Interested individuals should submit an application through careers.msu.edu and refer to position 546025 (*). Applicants must submit a detailed resume, a cover letter summarizing their qualifications, a research vision statement of up to 5 pages, a statement of philosophy on teaching, diversity, and outreach of up to 2 pages, and contact information for at least three references. For full consideration, applications should be received before 02 January 2018. Applications will be reviewed on a continuing basis thereafter until the positions are filled.
