iThemba LABS - Manager Accelerator (Five – Year Contract)
iThemba LABS occupies a unique position as the only national research facility administered by the National Research Foundation (NRF) within the Nuclear Cluster. The institution is South Africa’s premier facility for research and training in Accelerator Based Sciences and technologies, with its focus areas spanning the fields of Nuclear Physics, Materials Science, Radio-nuclides Production, Radiation Biophysics, and Accelerator Physics. The bulk of the facility’s research infrastructure is located at Faure, near Somerset West in the Western Cape, with a Tandem and Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Department on the periphery of the Wits University campus in Gauteng.
iThemba LABS seeks to appoint a senior accelerator physicist to manage the personnel, activities and resources for the operation, maintenance and development of the accelerators, beam lines and ancillary installations at iThemba LABS which provide charged particle beams and engineering support for nuclear physics research, and for the production of radioisotopes used in nuclear medicine, industry and research.
Minimum Requirements:
• PhD in Physics or Engineering
• At least 10 years’ post PhD experience in the operation of accelerators
• At least 5 years’ managemnt experience in the operation, maintenance and development of accelerators;
• Proven experience in leading Accelerator Engineering Projects;
• Thorough knowledge of accelerated charge particle physics;
• An in- depth knowledge and understaning of charged particle beam development principles.
• Sound knowledge of management principles and people management
Skills and Atrributes:
• A strong people leader with experience in guiding, driving, connecting and inspiring people
• Good communication skills (verbal, presentation and written)
• Experience in human resource management of skilled personnel
• Ability to craft strategic plans for Research and Development
• Ability to write grant proposals for competitive research funding
• An efficient leader and facilitator
• Demonstrable ability to establish local and international research networks
• Experience in building and managing professional relationships
• High work standard and ethics
Duties include but not limited to:
• Experience in cyclotrons and electrostatic accelerators
• Overall management of departmental staff in the Accelerator Department
• Providing direction and contributing to the development of departmental strategic plans and budget plans and ensuring the alignment thereof to the organisational strategy.
• Developing and enhancing accelerator and cyclotron facilities.
• Managing the departmental budget and planning for future development of the department
• Coordinating capital resource allocations across different sections of the department
• Managing staff succession planning in line with NRF:iThemba LABS institutional equity targets
• Supervision and training of junior staff.
• Ensuring departmental compliance with regulatory framework governing procurement
• Project management of accelerator related improvement projects.
• Partaking in local and international collaborations.
• Representing the general interest of the Accelerator Department at iThemba LABS management and at other relevant strategic platforms
